Abstract :
Purpoe
To decribe characteritic of intraocular inflammation in eye with active ocular toxoplamoi and to identify relationhip between ign of inflammation, complication (including elevated intraocular preure [IOP]), other dieae feature, and hot characteritic.
Deign
Multicenter, retropective, cro-ectional tudy.
Method
We reviewed the medical record of 210 patient with toxoplamic retinochoroiditi at even international ite (North America, outh America, and Europe) for information from the firt examination at each ite during which patient had active retinal leion. ign of inflammation included anterior chamber (AC) cell and flare and vitreou humor cell and haze. Retinal leion characteritic included ize (≤1 dic area [DA] or >1 DA) and preence or abence of macular involvement.
Reult
AC cell and flare were related to vitreou inflammatory reaction (P ≤ .041). One or more ign of increaed inflammation were related to the following factor: older patient age, larger retinal leion, and extramacular location. In 30% of involved eye, there wa evidence of elevated IOP (depite ue of glaucoma medication by ome patient); other complication were uncommon. IOP of more than 21 mm Hg wa aociated with both increaed AC cell and elevated flare (both P ≤ .001) and with macular involvement (P = .009). Inflammation eemed to be more evere among patient in Brazil than among thoe at other ite.
Concluion
There i ubtantial variation between patient in the everity of intraocular inflammation aociated with ocular toxoplamoi, attributable to multiple hot- and dieae-related factor. Reult ugget that dieae characteritic alo vary in different area of the world. Elevated IOP at initial examination reflect the everity of inflammation.
