Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the relationhip between retinal vacular caliber and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Deign
Population-baed cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Three thouand two hundred and eighty (78.7% repone rate) Malay ingaporean aged 40 to 80 year reiding in 15 ditrict of ingapore underwent retinal photography. Retinal veel caliber wa meaured from retinal photograph uing a validated computer-baed technique. AMD wa aeed following a modified Wiconin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading ytem.
Reult
Retinal data were available from 3,265 ubject (99.5% of 3,280) for thi tudy. Early and late AMD prevalence were 4.9% (n = 160) and 0.7% (n = 23) of the population, repectively, or in 205 (3.1%) and 30 (0.5%) eye examined, repectively. After controlling for age and arteriolar caliber, wider venular caliber wa aociated with higher prevalence of early AMD (odd ratio [OR] per one tandard deviation [D] increment in venular caliber, 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13 to 2.09). Thi aociation remained ignificant after further adjutment for gender, moking, hypertenion, diabete, and body ma index (OR per one D, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.11 to 2.09). There wa no ignificant aociation between retinal arteriolar caliber and early AMD, or between arteriolar or venular caliber and late AMD.
Concluion
Wider venular caliber wa aociated independently with early AMD. Thi finding may ugget that pathogenic procee linking to wider venular caliber be hared by early AMD and common cardiovacular rik factor uch a inflammation, dylipidemia, and endothelial dyfunction.
