Abstract
The notion of the workplace as a site where language socialization takes place is
becoming increasingly complex and contested. The reasons for this include the
way in which boundaries between work and other aspects of social life become
problematic, the changing nature of work itself, and the continuing changes
in the communicative environment at work. What counts as a workplace or a
location for preparing for work is not easy to define. The boundaries between
education and work are no longer patrolled by time, with a period of formal
education leading seamlessly to work.
