Abstract
Based on the energy dissipation mechanism and submerged jet diffusion properties in the scour pit, a new method for estimating the scour depth is proposed. The new method contains more influencing factors but less complexity in form. Scour coefficients in the formula are obtained from the in-site field data. The depth of scour pit downstream of the Three Gorges Dam is predicted using the proposed formula. The results are consistent with the experimental data by various model tests.
