Abstract :
In this paper, a fuzzy PID type controller with
considering Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage
(SMES) is proposed for solution of the Load Frequency
Control (LFC) problem. In order for a fuzzy rule based
control system to perform well, the fuzzy sets must be
carefully designed. A major problem plaguing the
effective use of this method is the difficulty of accurately
constructing the membership functions. For this reason,
in the proposed Multi Stage Fuzzy (MSF) type PID
controller, the membership functions are tuned
automatically using a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)
algorithm with a strong ability to find the most optimistic
results. This newly developed control strategy combines
the advantage of SMES and fuzzy system control
technique and leads to a flexible controller with simple
stricture that is easy to implement. Analysis on a threearea
restructured power system reveals that the proposed
control strategy by considering SMES unit improves
significantly the dynamical performances of system
against parametric uncertainties for a wide range of area
load demands and disturbances.
