Abstract :
To know the role of serum triglycerides in assessing the severity of pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-specific, multisystem, hypertensive disorder, characterised by hypertension (vasospasm), proteinuria and edema. It is the leading cause of maternal, fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. Preeclampsia is characterized by an abnormal elevation in triglyceride levels beyond the physiological increase of normal pregnancy which is generally regarded as evidence of the implication of lipid disturbances in its pathophysiologic mechanism. So our study includes estimating serum triglycerides in pre-eclampsia and its relation with severity. A cross sectional study was conducted in 50 pre-eclamptic primigravida (20-30 years age) in third trimester of pregnancy and 50 controls, matched for age and getational age and other anthropometric data. Statistical analysis was done using “student‘t’ test”. Severity of correlation was done with Karl Pearsson correlation Co-efficient. Serum triglycerides were significantly raised compared to controls and there is positive correlation between serum triglycerides and severity of preeclampsia. Results suggest that there are raised serum triglycerides in pre-eclampsia, severity rises with increases in concentration of triglycerides.
