Orthogonality on cosets

We present a version of the orthogonality relations for group characters which appears to be new—at least in this generality. The proof given uses only Maschkeʹs theorem and Schurʹs lemma. Among other consequences, Burnsideʹs result on the existence of zeros for nonlinear irreducible characters is generalized.
