Abstract :
This paper gives some biographical information about the mathematician Leonard Carlitz, several anecdotes about the man, and a brief survey of his research on finite fields. Included is a listing of 160 publications by Carlitz related to finite fields, as well as a listing of those 21 of his 44 Ph.D. students who wrote dissertations on this subject.
