Une histoire du théorème de Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt

A story of the so-called Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem Since the publication of Bourbakiʹs book on the Lie algebra in 1960, a theorem giving information on the structure of the enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra is called a Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem. The purpose of this article is to understand the contribution of Poincaré, Birkhoff and Witt to the definition and the study of properties of this enveloping algebra. In the second part of this article, one takes an interest to the generalizations of this theorem during the second half of the twentieth century to eventually result in its extension to the Leibniz algebra. Résumé Depuis la parution, en 1960, du livre de Bourbaki sur les algèbres de Lie, on appelle théorème de Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt un théorème qui donne de lʹinformation sur la structure de lʹalgèbre enveloppante dʹune algèbre de Lie. Le but de cet article est de comprendre la contribution de chacuns de ces trois mathématiciens à lʹélaboration de la définition de lʹalgèbre enveloppante et à lʹétude de ses propriétés. On sʹintéresse aussi aux généralisations quʹa connues ce théorème durant la deuxième moitié du vingtième siècle pour aboutir finalement à son extension aux algèbres de Leibniz.
