Abstract :
The 34th Annual Conference of the Society for Australasian Social Psychologists was hosted by the School of Psychology, James Cook University, and was held at Jupiters Hotel and Casino overlooking the Coral Sea and tropical Magnetic Island. The scientific program consisted of some 112 paper and poster presentations on topics spanning social psychology, including many on applied and clinical aspects of the subdiscipline. There were three invited addresses delivered by internationally renowned social psychologists: Professor Denis Hilton of the Université de Toulouse and Professor Dale T. Miller of Stanford University delivered Keynote Addresses, and Professor Joseph P. Forgas of the University of New South Wales delivered SASP’s Annual Presidential Address. Postgraduate students were well represented at the conference and, as is SASP tradition, there were two postgraduate workshops offered on the first day. The conference included a vigorous social program comprising a postgraduate students dinner and several excursions that took advantage of the natural wonders of the region. However, the social highlight was the closing banquet that was held at The Museum of Tropical Queensland, where delegates ate and danced in the shadow of the Museum’s prized reconstruction of the bow of HMS Pandora, the British navy ship sent to capture the Bounty mutineers and which later sank on the Great Barrier Reef.
