Abstract :
In this study I propose to examine the two major works of the Egyptian writer, Ibrāhīm al-Muwayliī (1844–1906): Mā hunālikaandMir’āt al-‘ālam aw adīth Mūsā ibn ‘Iām. Both of these works were originally published in the form of a series of newspaper articles (as will be discussed below), and they have only recently been published in book form.1
Since the life of the author and the events connected with the contents and publication history of both works are so closely intertwined, I will begin by providing a brief biography of the author, followed by an account of the circumstances surrounding the publication of each work. I will then discuss the works themselves.
