Abstract :
The concentrations of resin acids, chlorophenolic compounds and resin acid derived neutral compounds (fichtelite, dehydroabietin, tetrahydroretene and retene) were measured in sediments downstream of the discharge points of two New Zealand mechanical pulp mills which release primary treated effluent into estuarine and marine environments. The sandy sediments from both sites contained low concentrations of organic compounds known to be present in the wastewaters of the pulp mills. Sediments from shallow streams within remote site forested areas were found to contain measurable concentrations of resin acids and resin acid biodegradation products.
