Scanning electron microscopy: a new technique in the study of the microbiology of works of art

The scanning electron microscope is now used parallel to the traditional methods of study. Examples show the positive results obtained with it in the study of paintings, archaeological ruins, materials for restoration, etc. Particular emphasis is given to the microbiological research of frescoes. Five specific biological attacks are described and the problems of each are analysed.
