Abstract :
Satellite data has been shown to be usable in the form of single high resolution images, in the form of long series of high
resolution imagery, as long-term composites and finally, as graphs that may span a decade or more of continuous operation.
This last is emphasized in this discussion paper using a methodology called TIMELINE. Timeline represents a sharp
departure from the common use of satellite imagery derived from a single or selected set of short-term satellite passes. In its
graph or composite image form, it is shown to be a powerful tool in establishing patterns of long-term dynamic changes in
an ocean region. While the timeline data may be used alone, it provides its best information on a study region when
combined with other satellite, in situ and meteorological data. The methodology can be used in both well-documented or
data-scarce areas and, thus, provide real world synoptic data to the study and understanding of these regions
