Abstract :
This study is an attempt to justify a “greenway” landscape planning approach to the recreational management of the Bulgarian section of the Danube River landscape. The objectives of the study are: (1) to analyse the natural and anthropogenic components of the riverine landscape; (2) to assess the recreational suitability and aesthetic visual qualities of the natural landscape; (3) to outline the specific features of the unified recreational network and the strategy for its development as a key part of the greenway system for the Danube River landscape. Results show that landscape resources are available in the study area that provide the essential conditions for the development of a greenway with particular emphasis on recreation. General recommendations for implementation are included.
