Abstract :
This paper examines the degree of success of the city of Curitiba, Brazil, in controlling the energy expended in transport through integrated land use and transport planning. Three key variables—settlement shape, density and location of activities—are applied to the investigation of this rare built example of a linear city. Conclusions are drawn which enable us to compare this cityʹs experience favourably with Western cities, in terms of fuel burn, whilst also raising doubts about the validity of this experience as a benchmark in the context of developing countries.
