Isolated paraffinic methyl groups in humic substances

To determine the types of paraffinic methyl groups in a ground water humic substance, it was subjected to 1H-spin-echo-NMR experiments. About 60% of the methyl groups turned out to be isolated i.e. attached to hydrogen-free carbon. Obviously, large amounts of highly branched paraffinic moieties are present.
