Abstract :
The atmospheric transport/chemistry equations with a simple/complex chemical reaction mechanism was used to study the computational accuracy and efficiency of the time-splitting method. The results showed that the accuracy of the time-splitting method improves steadily as the time passes for the first few hours. The time-splitting method showed a good performance if all the chemical reaction rates are faster than the transport rates. However, the incorporation of the chemical species with slow chemical reaction into the mechanism deteriorates the accuracy. Even in this case, the accuracy of the time-splitting method can be improved as the time-splitting interval is reduced.
