Abstract
The present study deals with the design of in-series biofilm reactors with equal volumes and outlines—a computationally more efficient procedure which results in an accurate and optimum design with minimum total volume requirement for the given number of reactors to achieve the desired degree of treatment. The suggested approach is based on the mechanistic biofilm model instead of empirical one. Using a few reported sets of kinetic parameters, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can be successfully exploited for the design purposes.
