What does ‘biodiversity’ mean — scientific problem or convenient myth?

Biodiversity has become an everyday word, not just for ecologists but for politicians, the media and the general public too. But does It have a genuine scientific meaning that distinguishes it from earlier studies of diversity, or has it assumed a mythological status?
