Abstract
A global forest convention has been under negotiation since the Rio Conference in 1992. In spite of numerous meetings, we have failed to make significant progress beyond the weak set of nonlegally binding Forest Principles that were agreed in 1992. Here, we highlight the feasibility of using the World Heritage Convention to protect tracts of forest that are deemed to be of high conservation value to the world.
