Direct evidence for DNA intrastrand cross-linking by the nitrogen mustard mechlorethamine in synthetic oligonucleotides

Direct evidence for DNA intrastrand cross-link formation by mechlorethamine (1) is reported. Following treatment with 1, duplex and single strand DNAs possessing two or more contiguous dG residues contained intrastrand cross-links, as revealed by the release of 2 following acid hydrolysis.
