Ascending HNN extensions of residually finite groups can be non-Hopfian and can have very few finite quotients

We produce two examples demonstrating that an ascending HNN extension of a finitely generated residually finite group need not be residually finite. The first example has very few quotients. The second example is not Hopfian.
