Nursing: The canary in health care

The height of the Industrial Revolution created great demands for coal and material resources. Gas accumulated as coal was rapidly mined from shafts pushed deeper into the earth. To ensure that the gas was not at lethal concentration, canaries were released into the mine. Miners were not dispatched if the birds did not return, meaning the environment was unsafe.
