Abstract
A key focus in workforce development centers on successful nurse manager leadership. The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), as described by Turley,1 established three key areas for the organizationʹs 2003-2005 Strategic Plan: stewards of leadership, patient care delivery systems, and the work environment. As stewards of leadership in nursing and health care, the development of nurse managers is crucial to set standards, improve patient care, and maintain a viable health care work environment. The transition from staff nurse or charge nurse to a nurse manager cannot be based solely on clinical competence or expertise.
