Sums of diagonalizable matrices Original Research Article

It is shown that a square matrix A over an arbitrary field image is a sum of two diagonalizable matrices, except when image, in which case A is a sum of three diagonalizable matrices. The extent to which the ranks of the summands can be prescribed over an infinite field is also investigated, and necessary and sufficient conditions are presented.
