Mechanics of hierarchical materials

In this paper the simplest mathematical model to design nano-bio-inspired hierarchical materials is proposed. Simple formulas describing the dependence of strength, toughness and stiffness on the considered size-scale are derived, taking into account the toughening biomechanisms.
