Abstract
Indian banking system is going through a transitional stage where profitability is the
only key to success and efficiency and any threat to this efficiency or success should
be removed immediately. Profits of banks depends upon their income and
expenditure trends, more the income and less the expenditures, the more is the
profitability. Keeping this thing in mind, a comparative study of different bank
groups is done w.r.t. their income and expenditure trends. For that the entire
banking industry is divided into five groups namely nationalized banks, SBI and its
associate banks, old private sector banks, new private sector banks and foreign
banks. The study finds that new private sector banks are most successful in
increasing their profitability and foreign banks are least successful in this area
during the study period of 2008 to 2011.
