Abstract :
Seedlings of three Rubiaceae species, namely Neolamarckia cadamba, Nauclea
subdita and Mitragyna speciosa were attacked by Dysaethria quadricaudata Walker
(Lepidoptera: Uraniidae: Epipleminae) caterpillars at the nursery of the Forest Research
Centre (FRC), Sepilok. The latter two species are new host plant records for this caterpi llar.
Life cycle and behaviour of the pest were monitored. In view of its voracious and gregarious
feeding habit and high abundance, this species is potentially a threat to Rubiaceae tree
plantations. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and suitability of
insecticides in controlling this leaf-feeding insect. Results show that cypermethrin was
recommended, based on its comparative hazard level, cost and effectiveness.
