Abstract
Species diversity is an approximate proxy for biodiversity. In addition, species diversity characterises community structure. Species diversity can be expressed at three levels : alpha diversity, beta diversity and gamma diversity. Alpha diversity comprises species richness and evenness in the distribution of individuals among species. A variety of formulae have been used to calculate species diversity. Most commonly used ones are collected in this article.
