Abstract
Preliminary observations on the geographical distribution and conservation status of the recently described Kaʹapor capuchin Cebus kaapori, endemic to eastern Amazonia, are presented. The data presented confirm the speciesʹ rarity, given that it both has a relatively restricted geographical distribution in comparison with most other Amazonian primates and occurs at extremely low population densities. Additional problems for its conservation are hunting pressure and the devastating scale of deforestation within the region. C. kaapori is thus one of the most, if not the most, endangered, of Amazonian mammals; this also re-emphasizes the importance of eastern Amazonia for the conservation of Amazonian biodiversity as a whole.
