Abstract :
A novel organic–inorganic hybrid vanadate complex [{Zn(2,20-bpy)}2V8O21] 1 (2,20-bpy ¼ 2,20-bipyridine) was synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of V2O5, ZnCl2, 2,20-bpy and water. Its structure was determined by elemental analyses, XPS spectra, TG analysis, IR spectrum and the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal data for 1: C20H16N4O21V8Zn2, triclinic, space group P 2 1; a ¼ 8:0610ð16Þ A; b ¼ 9:7339ð19Þ A° , c ¼ 11:613ð2Þ A° , a ¼ 85:63ð3Þ8, b ¼ 96:59ð3Þ8, g ¼ 72:13ð3Þ8, Z ¼ 1 and RðFÞ ¼ 0:0456: The title compound contains an unusual two-dimensional vanadate network grafted with [Zn(2,20-bpy)]2þ complex. Furthermore, the vanadate layer in 1 consists of lefthanded and right-handed helical chains, which are built up from {VO5} square pyramids linked by {VO4} tetrahedra and further interconnected to form the double helical chains. q 2003 Elsevier B.V.
