Abstract
This paper discusses the development of descriptive cataloging
from 1830 to 1908 and focuses on the careers of Antonio Panizzi,
Charles Coffin Jewett, and Charles Ammi Cutter and the development of
the American Library Association (ALA) and the Library Association of
the United Kingdom (LAUK). It analyzes the various rules and codes
put forth by both Americans and British librarians and the eventual
cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom. [Article
