Abstract :
Has greaterturbulenceamongfirmsfueledrisingwageinstabilityintheU.S.?Wefind
strong supportforthehypothesisthatrisingturbulenceinthesalesoflargepublicly-
traded U.S.firmsoverthepastthreedecadeshasraisedtheirworkers’high-frequency
wagevolatility.Throughcontrolsandinstrumentalvariableprobes,weruleout
straightforwardcompositionalchurningasanexplanationforthelinkbetweenfirm
sales andwagevolatility.Wealsoobservethattherelationshipbetweensalesandwage
volatility atthefirmlevelisstrongersince1980,ispresentonlyinlargecompaniesand
is strongerinservicesthaninmanufacturingcompanies
