Abstract :
It isshownthataccountingfortechnologyvariations,acrosshouseholdsandperiods,is
importanttoobtaintheoreticallyconsistentestimatesofthedemandforcurrency.An
inventorymodelispresentedwherethewithdrawaltechnologyisexplicitlymodeled.
Both thelevelandtheinterestrateelasticityofcashholdingsdependonthewithdrawal
technologyavailabletohouseholds.Empiricalproxiesforthehouseholdwithdrawal
technology,basedonthediffusionofcashwithdrawalpointsmeasuredatcitylevel,are
usedtotestthemodelpredictionsonapanelofItalianhouseholddataoverthe
1993–2004period
