Abstract :
Two observationssuggestthatfinancialglobalizationplayedanimportantroleinthe recentfinancialcrisis.First,morethanhalfoftheriseinnetborrowingoftheU.S.non- financialsectorssincethemid-1980shasbeenfinancedbyforeignlending.Second,the collapseoftheU.S.housingandmortgage-backed-securitiesmarketshadworldwide effectsonfinancialinstitutionsandassetmarkets.Usinganopen-economymodelwhere financialintermediariesplayacentralrole,weshowthatfinancialintegrationleadstoa sharp riseinnetcreditinthemostfinanciallydevelopedcountryandtolargeassetprice spilloversofcountry-specificshockstobankcapital.Theimpactsoftheseshocksonasset prices areamplifiedbybankcapitalrequirementsbasedonmark-to-market.
