Abstract :
UsingJapanesedailyscannerdatawiththreebillionobservationsofpricesand quantitiesfrom1988to2005,thispaperinvestigatesmicroandmacropricedynamics. Thesedatarevealthatthefrequencyofpricechangesismuchlargerthanthatfoundin standardmonthlydatasets.Thepricechangefrequencyexhibitsacleartrendandstrong across-storeheterogeneity,whichcastsdoubtsonstandardNewKeynesianassump- tions.TheConsumerPriceIndex(CPI)basedonscannerdataappearstotracktheofficial CPI relativelywell,exceptforaperiodinwhichthelatterarguablyhadanupwardbias
