Abstract :
Recentanalysisfocusesonthegoldstandardasachannelforthetransmissionofthe Great Depression.Tradelinkages,whichloomlargeintherecentliterature,playa smallerrole.Boththegoldstandardandtradewereassociatedwithhigherco-move- ment atthebilaterallevelduringtheentireinterwarperiod.Wedocumentthatfixed exchangeratesandtrademadeacomebackafter1932,butco-movementdeclined.The fall after1932appearstobedrivenbytheriseofsmallerblocsbasedonmonetaryand trade cooperationandanaccompanyingfallinco-movementbetweenblocs
