Abstract :
Emergingmarketbusinesscyclesfeatureahighervariabilityofconsumptionrelativeto outputandastronglycountercyclicaltradebalance.Anequilibriumbusinesscycle modelinwhichagentslearntodistinguishbetweenthepermanentandtransitory componentsoftotalfactorproductivityshocksusingtheKalmanfilteraccountsfor thesefeatures.CalibratedtoMexico,themodelaccountsforthebehaviorofconsump- tion andthetradebalanceforawiderangeofvariabilityandpersistenceofpermanent shocksrelativetotransitoryshocks.EstimationforMexicoandCanadasuggestsmore severeinformationalfrictionsinemergingmarketsthanindevelopedeconomies
