Abstract :
Therearesubstantialcross-countrydifferencesinlaborsupplylateinthelifecycle(age
50þ). Atheoryoflaborsupplyandretirementdecisionsisdevelopedtoquantitatively
assesstheroleofsocialsecurity,disabilityinsurance,andtaxationforunderstanding
differencesinlaborsupplylateinthelifecycleacrossEuropeancountriesandthe
UnitedStates.Thefindingssupporttheviewthatgovernmentpoliciescangoalongway
towardsaccountingforthelowlaborsupplylateinthelifecycleintheEuropean
countriesrelativetotheUnitedStates,withsocialsecurityrulesaccountingforthebulk
of theseeffects
