Chlamydiae are widely distributed throughout the world, causing various forms of disease in animals and humans. The possibilities for diagnostic detection of chlamydiae have considerably improved following the introduction of DNA-based methods, particularly the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which permits direct identification from clinical specimens and differentiation of species. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.
