Abstract :
We report for the first time isolation and characterization of a tannase-producing anaerobe
from the rumen of migratory goats browsing on forage containing the anti-nutritional
hydrolysable tannin. A total of sixteen bacterial isolates were isolated. The isolates were
capable of degrading tannic acid to gallic acid and pyrogallol. One of the isolates due to its
unique tolerance up to a level of 3.5% (w/v) of tannic acid, and production of tannase was
further investigated and identified as Enterobacter ludwigii GRT-1, based on 16S rRNA gene
sequencing.
