Abstract :
The world is marching gradually towards greater concentration of the population in urban areas. This fact has challenged scholars and experts of city planning and government forces. Many scholars in this field have done researches and studies, and with a range of different views, have developed an extensive literature on this subject. Some people consider smaller towns as optimal, and some others prefer larger cities. Each group has considered city sizes and influential factors through specific views. The fact that there are different opinions about the optimum size of cities, varying from 10 thousand to 8 million people, approves that the optimum size for a city cannot be determined. On the other hand, the relationship between city size and social relations within the city is also one of the topics discussed in this article, and some comments from scholars have been studied in this concern. This article is based upon the meta-analysis method, and it finally sums up the views of scholars as conclusion.
