Abstract :
We must consider two different modes in analyzing the buckling of a cylindrical shell under a shear load. One is shear mode buckling, which occurs in the case of a short broad cylinder, and the other is bending mode buckling, which occurs in the case of a long slender cylinder. Some researchers have developed buckling strength evaluation methods for each mode. However, a certain reduction in buckling strength in the transition region between shear-mode-dominant and bending-mode-dominant regions has been observed from experiments. The present study focuses on the evaluation of the interaction effect between shear and bending loads. An analytical evaluation method of this interaction effect is developed from the viewpoint of the propagation of plasticity. The validity of this method is examined and a comparison made between finite element modelling analyses and experiments. Finally, it is suggested that this method makes it possible to evaluate the buckling strength for any combination of shear and bending loads.
