Abstract :
Atom transfer radical polymerization has been carried out for the polymerization of styrene initiated by methyl-4 (bromo-methyl) benzoate in dimethylformamide (DMF) at 110 oC with Cu(I)Br / N,N,Nʹ,Nʹʹ,Nʹʹ -Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the catalyst system. Kinetic investigations reveal that polymerization of styrene proceeds in a controlled manner with a first order plot of monomer consumption and with moderate polydispersity (Mw/Mn ? 1.23 - 2.14). Well defined temperature responsive polystyrene (PS)–block–poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) diblock copolymer has been successfully synthesized at 110 oC starting with PS-Br macro-initiator using Cu(I)Br/PMDETA as the catalyst system. The PS and PNIPAAm segments of the block polymer have been confirmed from EA, ATR-IR and 1H-NMR spectra analysis.
