Abstract
In stabilized finite element methods for incompressible flows, like e.g. Galerkin least squares (GLS) formulations, a bulk viscosity or penalty-like term is sometimes present. This paper reviews the appearance of this term and its role in stability, accuracy, and convergence speed issues.
