Abstract :
In this paper, residual-based modifications to standard finite element approximations for structural acoustics are developed and analyzed. Results for symmetric residual-based modifications for the coupled problem are presented. The accuracy of symmetric and unsymmetric methods is determined in a two-dimensional setting. A symmetric form of the residual-based modification results in lower computational costs than the other methods. The inclusion of new fluid–structure coupling and fluid stiffness terms arising from the consistent integration into the coupled formulation of residual modifications to the structural equations is shown to dramatically decrease the L2 error.
