Abstract :
Inthispaperwepresentnumericalsimulationsofaconceptualhelium-cooledfluidizedbedthermalnuclearreactor.Thesimulationsareperformedusingthecoupledneutronics/multi-phasecomputationalfluiddynamicscodefiniteelementtransientcriticalitywhichiscapableofmodellingalltherelevantnon-linearfeedbackmechanisms.Theconceptualreactorconsistsofanaxi-symmetricbedsurroundedbygraphitemoderatorinsidewhich0.1cmdiameterTRISO-coatednuclearfuelparticlesarefluidized.Detailedspatial/temporalneutronfluxandtemperatureprofileshavebeenobtainedprovidingvaluableinsightintothepowerdistributionandfluiddynamicsofthiscomplexsystem.Thenumericalsimulationsshowthattheuniquemixingabilityofthefluidizedbedgivesrise,asexpected,touniformtemperatureandparticledistribution.Thisuniformityenhancestheheattransferandthereforethepowerproducedbythereactor.
