Abstract :
TherearetwelveoperatingVVER-440/213reactorsintheCzechRepublic,HungaryandSlovakia.Theplantownershavecarriedoutextensivesafetyenhancementprogrammes,whichhaveincludedmeasurestoimproveprevention,mitigationandcontrolofdesignbasisaccidents.Recently,therehavebeenanumberofprojectstostudytheSevereAccidentManagementaspectsoftheseplants.TheplantownershavealsoinitiatedPlantLifeManagementprogrammes.TheobjectiveoftheVERSAFEConcertedActionistocreateanetworkoftheVVER-440/213plantownersandoperators,whichaimsatdefinitionofthefurtherresearchneedsofsevereaccidentsandplantageingfromtheutilities’viewpoint.Thestartingpointistoformulateageneralapproachtosevereaccidentmanagementandplantlifemanagementandthenproceedtodefinetheneedsfortheadditionalinformationexpectedfromthesafetyresearch.Theroleofnationalresearchinstitutesandorganisationsofthepartnercountriesisofcrucialimportanceinperformingsuchresearchand,thus,creatingandmaintainingtheexpertiseonthenationallevel.Thesuccessfulcompletionoftheprojectwillassistinestablishingwell-definedresearchprojectsthatareorientedtotheneedsoftheend-usersandprovideinformationthatcanbeusedtofacilitateandsupportthenegotiationsoftheEUapplicantcountriesoperatingVVER-440reactors.
