Abstract :
InthispaperanalyticformulaearederivedtoestimateconservativelytheunavailabilityofatwooutoffourdigitalsafetyInstrumentationandControl(I&C)systemwithrecurrenttests.Theanalyticformulaedisclosetheinfluenceofthedifferentparametersonthesystem’sunavailability.Inparticular,thechoiceofapropertestintervalisessentialtoguaranteetherequiredlowunavailability.Theextraordinaryself-checkingcapabilitiesofdigitalsystemsaretakenintoaccountbyuseofanappropriatefailuremodeltogetherwiththetreatmentofdependentfailuresoftheintegratedsoftware–hardwaresystem.TheunderlyingmethodologyisapprovedbylicensingexpertsofnuclearfacilitiesinGermany.
